College Admissions Process

Lower School

Emphasis needs to be placed on verbal and mathematical skills. Parents should encourage students to do as well as possible in all subjects. Reading, of course, is the key component in all English and social studies classes and plays a strong role in other academic areas. Students should be encouraged to read on a daily basis -- not just for surface knowledge, but to analyze and question what they are reading. The basic math skills developed in these lower grades carry over into the areas of science and foreign language. Even physical education and fine arts classes will cause a student to develop mentally and socially as well as physically.

Parents can help their children most during these years by making sure that students develop good study habits and encouraging them to do as well as possible in their schoolwork. Summer camps, sports activities, summer reading, even travel can enrich a child at this age and have a lasting impact on future development.
