First Grade Summer Reading
Plan enjoyable summer reading times with your soon-to-be first graders. There are no specific reading requirements, but we hope you will read aloud with your child for at least fifteen minutes every day. It is the single most important thing you can do to ensure your child's future success.
If your child is an emergent reader, let your child's interest and reading level guide your selections. A comfortable reading level will increase fluency and reading speed. Taking a relaxed approach with the new reader will increase enjoyment and encourage a love of books and reading.
For reading aloud to your child we recommend the “100 Picture Books Everyone Should Know” list from the New York Public Library, available at the link http://kids.nypl.org/reading/recommended2.cfm?ListID=61.
Dive into many of these titles, or choose others for refreshing family reading. These books should be available at your nearest public library. While at your local library, check out their summer reading programs for your child. Also consider checking out books on CD which can be enjoyed together at home or on car trips.
