Foreign Language Studies

Spanish

Students in fifth grade Spanish spend this year in an exploratory course. During the year, students explore various topics such as shopping, city life, dance, and art. Students are expected to use the vocabulary they have in basic language production. Seventh and eighth grade Spanish students begin an earnest study of the Spanish language, learning basic grammar and vocabulary. As they move through these two years, students also work on language production skills and conversational skills.

French

Students in sixth grade French spend a semester exploring the French language, history and culture. Games and songs are instrumental in helping students to assimilate new vocabulary and concepts. In seventh and eighth grade, French students complete the first year of high school French, studying grammar, syntax, and vocabulary. They also study French culture by watching feature films such as Les Miserables and reading The Little Prince.

Latin

Exploratory Latin students spend one semester of the sixth grade year studying the roots of language, derivatives, and Roman culture. Students are also introduced to language study skills. Seventh and eighth grade Latin classes focus intently on the elements of language. Students read and write Latin translations while studying grammar, syntax, and vocabulary. Students successfully completing these two years of study will have a good foundation for language study.
