May 7, 2008

The FRA baseball rallied with 3 runs in the 7th inning to nip MLK 7-6 and advance to the District 9 AA finals game.

Brooks Oursler pitched 5 strong innings, leaving with a tied ballgame. Scott Uebelhor relieved for one inning, striking out two, followed by Trey Maitland who struck out the side in the 7th inning with a blazing fastball to clinch the game for the Panthers.

Tuesday’s game was The Game of the Year [so far] as the Panthers led, then rallied with 3 runs in the seventh to nip MLK 7-6. From the start the Panthers hit the ball. John Adam McCaslin tied the game in the seventh with a safety squeeze. John Shubert followed with a RBI single and Brooks Oursler added another RBI single.

Eric Warren was BIG behind the plate as he threw out two runners and used his body to block several pitches. Eric also had the key hit to ignite the come-from-behind rally.

Earlier in the game Zach Smeykal had a RBI single and an important sacrifice bunt. Greg Glaser hit a booming double to the wall, key to the comeback rally. Andy Williams had two early hits. Scott Uebelhor had a hit.

And THE MAN OF THE DAY was junior Trey Maitland. Offensively, Trey had a RBI sacrifice fly. Defensively, in the game's key moments with the bases loaded, Trey made a game-saving diving catch of a long fly ball to prevent another run. Then, in the deciding seventh, clinging to a two-run lead, Trey struck out the side with a blazing fastball to clinch the win for the Panthers.

The Panthers (24-5) now are in the district winners finals. We are off today, waiting for an elimination game between David Lipscomb and MLK.

FRA Softball Team Sweeps Doubleheader

Reported by Beth Nelson

April 25, 2008

The Panther softball team completed their final home games of the season with a flourish on Thursday by winning both games in a doubleheader against the Pearl-Cohn Firebirds.

Game #1: FRA 8 PCHS 7

The first game was a battle ending in an extra "overtime inning". The Lady Panthers had a great game at bat. Tyler Hancock was 3 for 3 at the plate; winning pitcher Katie Givens was 2 for 4 with one Double; freshman Sperry Gander was 2 for 3 with one RBI; Abby Nelson was 2 for 3 with a Home Run and an RBI, and Erin Ford hit a double. The girls fought hard in the field also. Katie did a great job on the pitching mound, striking 11 batters out! Emily Canady and Erin Ford joined forces to make 2 double plays. Austin Davis was tough behind the plate.

Game #2: FRA 10 PCHS 4

The second game was equally fun to watch. Although the girls continued to play great defense behind Katie’s pitching, allowing only 4 runs, it was the hitting that made the game exciting. Emily was 3 for 3 with 3 doubles and 2 RBIs, Abby was 2 for 4 with a double and a triple. Additional hits were made by Erin, Mattie, Sara Barnes, and Taylor Hemphill. Senior and first time softball player, Mattie Jackson, did a great job catching during the 2nd game.

A Big THANK YOU to Tiff Canady. The field looked great for Senior Night.

The US Softball games scheduled for this Saturday, April 26, have been CANCELLED. The next game for the Panther softball team is Monday when the girls face Hume-Fogg at Buena Vista Park at 5 pm.

Softball Team Loses to MLK

Reported by Beth Nelson

April 16, 2008

The US Panther softball team faced MLK at MLK on Tuesday. It was a perfect afternoon to watch a great sport even though our girls lost to MLK 10 - 0.

Hits were provided by Erica Haselton ( double ), Mattie Jackson ( single ), Austin Davis ( single ), Erin Ford ( single), Taylor Hemphill ( bunt ), and Abby Nelson ( sacrifice bunt ).

Outfield contributions were made by Liz Boyd and Tyler Hancock, who caught a pop fly which ended the 4th inning.

Our infield continues to work together and improve. Erica Haselton caught a hard line drive at 3rd, sending a very disappointed MLK batter back to her teammates. Abby Nelson fielded a ball at short and threw to 1st base to get a batter out. All the infield contributed by fielding and working together. Katie Givens and Abby Nelson also caught pop flys. Mattie Jackson did a great job on first base, stretching to catch the ball and make runners return to the dugout. Austin Davis continues to do a phenomenal job as catcher, jumping up and intimidating would be base "stealers".

Austin Davis and Katie Givens combined forces to tag out a runner trying to steal home! Junior Tyler Hancock had a great day in centerfield, repeatedly returning long hit balls to the infield, stopping runners.

Baseball Update

Reported by Coach Jerry WIlliams

April 14, 2008

Junior Varsity

FRA's JV squad defeated Father Ryan's JV on The Hill Saturday morning 12-6.

Depth in pitching has become a strength of this squad. In fact, not all of our JV pitchers were used as we increased the pitch count to 40 pitches per outing. Freshman Jackson Wills threw five outs while freshman Andrew Woodfin added a change-up pitch to his repertoire and threw 7 outs. Sophomore Alex Cate added a curveball to the mix for six outs and freshman Connor Maitland struck out the side for his three outs.

Offensively Matt Nelson and Connor Maitland had two rbi's each. Woody Weeks had two hits and a bang-bang play while playing the hot corner.

The Panther JV team plays again this Tuesday at Lipscomb following the varsity game and at Father Ryan next Saturday at 10 am.

Thursday CPA Game highlights

Scott Uebelhor, in relief, pitched five plus innings to stem the tide as the Panthers rallied from a 1-7 deficit to win a thrilling 9-8 comeback victory over the CPA Lions last Thursday. The win was a stellar performance by the entire team. Zach Smeykal sparked the comeback with a two-run double. Trey Maitalnd followed with a two-out, run scoring single. Eric Warren was CLUTCH with three hits, including the rbi-double that plated Connor Maitland with the go-ahead run. Brooks Oursler contributed two valuable hits. Senior John Shubert imitated Willie Mays with the Greatest Catch in my years at FRA as he made a thrilling, running catch of a deep fly ball.

The game ended as if to be shown on ESPN Classic. To set the scene, the Lions had two runners on base with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Their batter hit a deep fly to score one run, but Trey Maitland caught the fly and then nailed the runner coming to third in a game-ending double play.

The team is 12-4 and 6-1 in the district.
