Tips for Hydration
08-08-08
Weigh In: Weigh yourself both before and immediately after practice. Drink three cups of water for every pound lost.
Take Action: Never rely on thirst to dictate how much fluid you need. By the time you feel thirsty, your internal fluid level has already dipped below what you need for optimal athletic performance.
Start Early: Pre-hydrate before practice or a game. Start hydrating five hours prior to activity. By drinking fluids well in advance, your muscles, tissues, organs, and blood will be thoroughly saturated by the time you are ready to play. Pre-hydrating also means you won’t have fluid sloshing around in your stomach.
Provided by Majid “Magic” Noori, Vanderbilt University food coach
Stay away from carbonated drinks, especially caffeinated drinks.
If your Urine is a clear color that is a good indication that you are well hydrated.
Vanderbilt Sports Medicine is our health provider and Amanda Donohoe is our athletic trainer.
