State Champs

For the fourth time in six years, the FRA girls soccer team ended the season as TSSAA Class A/AA state champions, building on a soccer dynasty which now boasts 120 FRA students playing soccer at the middle school and varsity levels. FRA has reached the state title game in five of the past six years, and during the 2007 season, the Panthers repeated as district champions, region champions, sectional champions, and state champions.

FRA and CPA, who both compete in District 9 A/AA, met four times during the 2007season. The Panthers posted shutouts in each game: 3-0 in the regular season, 1-0 in the district final, and 3-0 in the region final game. The state title game score was 3-0. Kaitlyn Smith ’09, Morgan Crofford ’10, and Tory Pitts ’09 (assisted by Abby Wharton ’11) provided FRA’s scoring while goalkeeper Emily Canady ‘08 and the strong defense line-up of Logann Rogers ’08, Morgan Alexander ‘10, Sophie Walker’11, and Kaitie McDonald ’08 kept the Lions scoreless for the fourth time during the season.

The team’s season record was an impressive 21-4-2. FRA finished 18-0 against teams in its classification, including wins over four A/AA teams that reached the state tournament. Coach Ken McDonald commented on the impressive record at the state tournament, “Now that it’s over, it does solidify it for us. We’re the top team in A/AA and state champions.” The three ’08 graduates and captains, Kaitie McDonald, Emily Canady, and Logann Rogers, started every game they played for the Panther soccer program. “It’s going to be a tough class to replace,” McDonald said. “One of the many factors in our run at the end of the year was our senior leadership. We’re grateful for their incredible contributions to our soccer program.”
